The new check will assess how well you meet the standard, which is why it’s being called a ‘standards check’.
New standards check
The DSA wants the examiner to assess whether your instruction helps a person to learn in an effective way. The DSA proposes to no longer offer role play when the new standards check starts.
As the examiner will assess whether your instruction helps a person to learn in an effective way, you can best show this by giving a normal lesson to a real pupil.
When you need to take the standards check
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) will write to you when your standards check is due.
You must take at least 1 standards check in each 4-year period that you’re registered as an ADI.
You don’t have to pay a fee to take the standards check.
You must take the standards check even if you:
- don’t have your own car
- aren’t currently working as an ADI
You can be taken off the ADI register if you repeatedly don’t attend your standards check.
What you must bring to the test
You must bring:
- a pupil
- a suitable car
- your ADI registration certificate
Your pupil can be any of the following:
- an inexperienced learner
- an experienced learner
- an inexperienced full licence holder
- an experienced full licence holder
What happens in the standards check
An examiner will watch you give a normal 1 hour driving lesson to your pupil.
The examiner will look for evidence that you have:
- identified the learning needs of your pupil
- agreed the learning needs with your pupil
You can take your trainer or mentor with you, but they can’t take part in the lesson.
How you’ll be assessed
You’ll be assessed on your ability to show that your pupil has improved their skills and understanding, eg improved ability to deal with a risky situation.
You’ll be marked on 3 main areas:
- lesson planning
- risk management
- teaching and learning skills
The 3 main areas are broken down into 17 further areas of competence. You’ll get a score from 0 to 3 for each.
